Queen's Head

An ode to The Queens Head from the inhabitants of Wing and surrounding villages...

Please save our Pub and join our community!

The news spread like wildfire when the sign went up,
Our beloved Queen's Head now officially shut??!!!
There's not been such bad news since Donald Trump
And it's safe to say Wing villagers now have the hump.
We took it for granted, thought it'd always be there,
Talk about wake up the villagers and give them a scare!
The original building dates back to 1545
Just needs a little TLC to help it survive.
Pardon the cheesiness but we've got to get this pun in,
We need a nice lessor to take it under their WING.

We're nestled in countryside, we're lovers of dogs,
We're a family village and oh we do love our sprogs!
School mums stand nattering after drop off in the cold,
Think how much tea, cake and coffee could have been sold!
NCT or sleep-deprived mums needing a caffeine injection,
Others too weak to resist your fresh cake selection.
Students abound here, and commuters through Wing,
So many people would just love to pop in.
We'd love a café open in the day,
Sandwiches and coffee to eat in, or away.

The Queens Head has a place in our village and hearts,
There's a call for local musicians to share musical arts,
Folk evenings and jazz, live bands playing too,
Cocktails and cappuccinos, pie, mash and stew?
There's a space for freshly, home-cooked food in our tums
And a calling to gather for chatty school mums.
There's a place in the village for good wine and real ale,
And the "local-arty-farties-selling-their-wares" monthly sale.
There's room for a touch up (we're meaning the décor),
Modern and rustic, and a party dance floor.
Bingo for Grandma, (why not Grandpa too),
Get the Lollipop Lady so they can have a tipple (or two).
Spread out comfy sofas, we'll sit there with our kids,
Or without them (quite happily) with a bottle of fizz!

Locally-sourced ingredients, good affordable food,
Whether for meetings or fun times, a relaxed friendly mood.
You could get on-table beer taps, they'd soon bring a profit,
Always a good talking point when you get stuck on a topic!
A place where you go when your day job is done,
A place for takeaway coffee... there's not currently one! :(
You'd make a killing any season offering afterschool tea,
You'd be packed, rest assured, when we descend after 3!
Picnics in the garden, string lights & BBQs,
We are not jesting, you could make a fortune!
A garden brimming with play and cascades of laughter,
Children playing together without us chasing after.

God forbid our Queens Head be the next pub to go,
The Sportsmans Arms was to us enough of a blow.
God knows we don't need any more bloody houses,
(And now with only one pub left it'd be awfully crowded).
God knows we're desperate for a good carvery,
The Cock has its place, but doesn't meet everyone's needs.
We're not a poncy village, we are a real mix,
Some of us like fondue and some cheesey chips!
There's even room to extend the pub at the back,
Or to offer B&B which the village still lacks!

So Mr or Mrs, whoever you are!
Whether you live local or come from afar.
These are only ideas to capture your heart
Because you see the potential and want to be part.

"It would be great to have the Queens Head back- new and improved! Another vote for real ale and family friendly (including dogs) here. Don't forget we need to make sure we use our local amenities to keep them."
Liz-Morgan (25 Mar 2017)
"Perfectly situated in the centre of the village, this pub creates a focus and great meeting place for all villagers. Lovely garden too!"
CR (22 Mar 2017)
"Really don't want to see another pub go :("
Elaine-P (22 Mar 2017)
"old pub - not houses"
SW (22 Mar 2017)
"Completely agree with the comments so far, the pub should not be sold for yet more housing. It should either be purchased by the villagers or people who can turn it into a food destination pub."
Steve-P (22 Mar 2017)
"Agree with all the comments made so far. Question is what can actually be done by the village and local community to save this pub?"
Matt-Powell (22 Mar 2017)
"The Queens Head was the best pub in the village and I ranked it side by side with the other 2 best pubs in the area (Three Locks, Bald Buzzard). Exceptional real ale selection. great food, lovely garden. The first sneaky mid week pub lunch of the year in the garden on a sunny day was an event my wife and I looked truly forward too! It always had a friendly atmosphere and inviting bar. The Cock used to be nice but it's no longer a pleasant place to hang out. With more houses being built, the village really needs 2 pubs to provide some competition and give people a choice. I've never met any one who didn't like it and it felt busy enough to be profitable whenever I was in there. The Queen's Head closure detracts significantly from the quality of the village. I understand we need more houses and they will built, but at the same time a village needs amenities. I'd like to see the council giving small businesses like this incentives to help them survive. "

"This should be a pub not housing there is so much potential and new business revenues that could be opened up. There are so many villagers that would support the new owners, the previous owners missed a real ticket by not really making it child friendly and opening in the mornings for tea and coffee. With some vision this place could be wonderful and the real hub of the village. "
Ray-Bryans (21 Mar 2017)
"It would be a crying shame to see this village pub lost to us all. And even more houses put there."
Eddietheeagle (21 Mar 2017)
"It would be a terrible shame if the Queens Head was to not retain its existence as a pub. It offered good competition for The Cock, with a different vibe and offering excellent food and real ale, which would be sorely missed!"
Cathryn (21 Mar 2017)
"We have enjoyed visiting the Queen's Head ever since we moved to Wing 13 years ago. Such a nice atmosphere, and great potential to do so much more with it. It would be extremely sad if it was turned in to yet more houses, we need a vibrant friendly free house for our vibrant friendly community."
FB-user-45553 (21 Mar 2017)
"We moved to the village in 2010 and Denise and team at the Queen's Head were key to helping us settle in to life in the village, with a thriving pub/restaurant with excellent food and drink. We had many memorably good lunches, dinners and special events in the QH. We had events in the large garden ourselves, inside various areas in the pub too, and it was the natural choice for a christening type party for our daughter. We attended many excellent and well-run large events hosted by the pub. I have absolutely no doubt the pub could be a huge success again under new management and I would imagine that the owners, who moved on (& we followed!) to their success at The Wheatsheaf and now The Stag, would love nothing more than to see it brought back to life again, too. Wing certainly doesn't need more housing or a pub offering the same as the Cock. It needs to be something different now. A Thai restaurant? A steak restaurant? A cafe with a safe play area for babies? Maybe one that is more attractive to AP mums during school hours, but that could offer something after school/weekends for slightly older children? And of course decent, non-carvery, freshly cooked, honest food for evenings.... SAVE OUR MONARCH!"
Charlotte-Taylor (21 Mar 2017)
FiPhim (21 Mar 2017)
"Save our village pub! Family friendly pub with good food, and prosecco and gin on tap. That'll do me! "
DT (21 Mar 2017)
"Please anyone save this lovely pub. Under the right management and listening to what as a village we would like will be a great success. So much potential to cater for all ages, finding the right times of the day/night to suit everyone. Nice dining is great but not everyone has the endless pocket to pay for "posh dinners". Make it family friendly but also times for those wishing a quiet drink. "
Natasha-Richmond- (21 Mar 2017)
"It would be such a shame for the pub to go, when it could be made into something great for everyone in the village. "
EP (21 Mar 2017)
"Please save our village pub! It's a large part of our community and we don't want to lose it forever! "
CJL (21 Mar 2017)
"I really, really want the right person to come along and snap up this gorgeous pub with so much potential! This poem was on behalf of all residents in Wing and surrounding villages."
